When a holiday falls on Saturday, the preceding Friday is observed. When it falls on Sunday, the following Monday is observed.

Why Banks Follow the Federal Reserve Holiday Schedule

All US banks — national banks, state banks, and credit unions — tie their closure dates to the Federal Reserve’s processing calendar. The Fed’s Fedwire (for wire transfers) and ACH network operate only on business days, so there is no practical benefit to a bank being open on a federal holiday: no funds can move through the interbank system.

This means that even if a bank branch were physically open on a holiday, your wire transfer would still be delayed until the next business day.

What Works (and What Doesn’t) on Bank Holidays

Always available:

  • ATM cash withdrawals and deposits (at most ATMs)
  • Online and mobile banking — balance checks, internal transfers, bill pay scheduling
  • Zelle payments to enrolled users (processes instantly 24/7)
  • Viewing statements, downloading documents

Delayed until next business day:

  • Outgoing and incoming wire transfers (Fedwire is closed)
  • ACH transfers — direct deposits, bill payments, external bank transfers
  • Check clearing and availability
  • New account openings that require branch verification

Holiday-by-Holiday Coverage

Each holiday has its own quirks — some banks stay open on Columbus Day and Veterans Day, and others treat the day after Thanksgiving as a half-day. See the individual holiday pages below for bank-specific details.

2025–2026 Bank Holiday Schedule

Full calendar listing every bank holiday for both 2025 and 2026 with observed dates when holidays fall on weekends.

Are Banks Open on MLK Day?

Martin Luther King Jr. Day (third Monday in January) — most banks close, but a handful of credit unions and regional banks stay open.

Are Banks Open on Presidents Day?

Presidents Day (third Monday in February) — same pattern as MLK Day; most branches close, online banking is fully functional.

Are Banks Open on Columbus Day?

Columbus Day is one of the most inconsistently observed holidays — some banks stay open, others close. Check your bank specifically.

Are Banks Open on Veterans Day?

Veterans Day (November 11) — observed on the actual date, not shifted to Monday. Banks generally close; the postal service and many businesses stay open.

Are Banks Open the Day After Thanksgiving?

Black Friday is not a federal holiday — banks are typically open, often with reduced hours. Wire and ACH transfers process normally.

Tips for Banking Around Holidays

Send wires and ACH early. If you have a time-sensitive payment (rent, closing costs, payroll), initiate it at least one business day before the holiday. A wire sent Thursday before a Friday holiday won’t arrive until Monday.

Use Zelle for holiday emergencies. Zelle transfers between enrolled bank accounts process in real time, 24/7, regardless of holidays. If someone needs money immediately on a bank holiday, Zelle is your best option.

Check your branch’s actual hours. Some bank branches — especially in shopping centers — keep limited Saturday-style hours on holidays. Your bank’s app or Google Maps listing will show current hours.

Schedule automatic payments ahead. A scheduled payment due on a bank holiday will process on the next business day, which could result in a late payment if your biller doesn’t have a grace period.
