Mobile deposit funds are available based on Regulation CC rules and your bank’s individual policies. For most deposits under $5,525 from established accounts: $225 is available the next business day, and the full remainder follows within 1–2 additional business days. Many banks release the full amount next business day for smaller checks.

The federal standard: $225 available next business day. Most banks do better than this for trusted customers.

Regulation CC Availability Schedule

Regulation CC (the Expedited Funds Availability Act) sets minimum requirements for how quickly banks must make deposited funds available. Mobile deposits are treated like “non-local” or “image” deposits:

Check Type Minimum Availability
Cash Same business day
Wire transfer Next business day
Government checks (IRS, SSA) Next business day
Cashier’s/certified checks Next business day (first $5,525)
Standard personal/business checks $225 next business day; remainder by 2nd business day
Checks over $5,525 $225 next day; $5,300 on 2nd day; excess by 7th day
New account (first 30 days) Up to 9 business days

These are minimums — banks can and often do make funds available faster.

Actual Availability by Bank (May 2026)

Bank Standard Availability Same-Day Option
Ally Bank Next business day (full amount) No
Capital One 360 1 business day Sometimes
Chase 1–2 business days Yes, for eligible deposits
Bank of America Next business day Yes, for eligible customers
Wells Fargo 1–2 business days Limited
Discover Bank Next business day (most checks) No
Chime 1–2 business days No
SoFi Next business day No

Ally and Discover typically release the full deposit amount on the next business day — not just the $225 minimum — for established accounts with clean history.

What Triggers a Longer Hold?

Banks can impose exception holds that extend availability up to 9 business days under specific circumstances:

1. New Account If your account was opened within the last 30 days, most banks apply maximum holds on mobile deposits. This is the most common reason first-time depositors face multi-day waits.

2. Repeated Overdrafts If your account has been overdrawn 6 or more times in the past 6 months, banks can extend holds up to 9 business days.

3. Large Check Amount For checks over $5,525:

  • $225 available next business day
  • $5,300 available on the 2nd business day
  • Remainder (anything over $5,525) available on the 7th business day

4. Reasonable Doubt About Collectability If the bank suspects the check may not be paid — for example, if you’ve had returned checks before, or the paying bank is flagged — they can extend the hold.

5. Deposit After Cutoff Time If you deposit at 11:30 PM and the cutoff is 11:00 PM, your “business day” starts the next morning. A deposit after Wednesday’s cutoff time is treated as if deposited Thursday — shifting availability to Friday or later.

How to Get Faster Access to Funds

1. Deposit before the cutoff time. Every bank has a daily cutoff, usually 3–10 PM. Deposits before the cutoff are processed that business day.

2. Use a government check or cashier’s check. These get next-business-day availability for the full amount (up to $5,525) regardless of account age.

3. Ask about immediate availability. Chase and Bank of America offer same-day availability for certain deposits if you request it — sometimes with a small fee.

4. Build account history. Banks loosen holds for customers with 90+ days of account history and no overdrafts. There’s no way to skip this — it just takes time.

5. Use direct deposit instead. For recurring income, direct deposit makes funds available on the scheduled payday — no holds.

Business Days vs. Calendar Days

A common confusion: Regulation CC timelines use business days, not calendar days. Business days are Monday–Friday, excluding federal holidays.

Example: You mobile deposit a $1,000 check on Friday at 2 PM.

  • Friday = Business Day 1 (deposit received)
  • Monday = Business Day 2 (next business day)
  • $225 available Monday morning
  • Remaining $775 available Tuesday morning (2nd business day)

If Monday is a federal holiday, shift everything one additional day.

Understanding Your Deposit Receipt

After submitting a mobile deposit, your app should show:

  • Deposit amount: Total check amount
  • Available today: Typically $0 or the immediate availability amount
  • Available next business day: Usually $225 or the full amount depending on your bank
  • Full availability date: Date when the remaining balance clears

If you don’t see this information, check your transaction history or call your bank.
