Venmo is free to download and free to use for basic P2P payments — setup takes about five minutes. Linking a bank account unlocks the ability to send and receive money. Verifying your identity (legal name, DOB, last 4 of SSN) raises your weekly sending limit from $999.99 to $4,999.99. This guide covers every step from account creation to cashing out.

See the Venmo overview for limits and fees at a glance.

Step 1: Download and Create Your Account

  1. Download the Venmo app from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android). There is no desktop app for sending payments.
  2. Open the app and tap Sign Up
  3. Enter your phone number or email address
  4. Create a strong password (12+ characters, mix of letters, numbers, symbols)
  5. Enter the verification code texted or emailed to you
  6. Create your @username — this is how people will search for you; choose something recognizable but not your full name for privacy
  7. Agree to the terms of service

Security step: Immediately go to Settings → Security → Two-Factor Authentication and turn it on. This protects your account from unauthorized access. See Is Venmo safe? for full security guidance.

You can fund Venmo payments from a bank account (free), a linked debit card (free), or a credit card (3% surcharge). Linking a bank account also allows you to cash out your Venmo balance.

  1. Go to Settings (gear icon, top right)
  2. Tap Payment Methods → Add bank or card
  3. Choose Bank Account or Card

For a bank account, Venmo offers two methods:

  • Instant verification — log in to your bank via Plaid (quick but requires sharing bank credentials with Plaid)
  • Manual verification — Venmo makes two small deposits (1–2 cents each) that you confirm, taking 2–3 business days

Recommended: Link at least one bank account — this keeps sending and receiving free and allows free standard withdrawals.

Step 3: Verify Your Identity (Unlock Higher Limits)

Without identity verification, your weekly sending limit is $999.99. Verifying unlocks the full $4,999.99/week limit.

  1. Go to Settings → Identity Verification
  2. Enter your legal name, date of birth, and the last 4 digits of your Social Security Number
  3. Venmo may request a photo of a government-issued ID for some accounts

Venmo collects this information to comply with federal financial regulations (Bank Secrecy Act / anti-money-laundering rules). The process takes 1–5 minutes and typically resolves immediately.

Step 4: Configure Privacy Settings

Before your first transaction, set your privacy preference:

  1. Settings → Privacy → Default privacy setting → Private

This prevents your payment notes and contact names from appearing in the social feed. Venmo’s feed is semi-public by default — your contacts can see when you transact, even if not the amounts.

Additional recommended settings:

  • Settings → Privacy → Past Transactions — set existing transactions to Private
  • Settings → Security → PIN for payments — require your PIN every time you tap Pay

How to Send Money

  1. Tap the blue Pay or Request button (center bottom of the home screen)
  2. Search for the recipient by @username, full name, email, or phone number — double-check before sending; payments are irreversible
  3. Enter the amount
  4. Add a note describing the payment (required by Venmo; note is visible to both parties and, depending on privacy settings, to others)
  5. Tap Pay (green) — not Request
  6. Review the details and confirm with your PIN or biometric

The recipient’s Venmo balance is credited instantly. They can spend it via the Venmo Debit Card or transfer it to their bank.

Payment method selection: Venmo automatically uses your Venmo balance first, then your default bank account. Tap Change next to the payment method to choose a different source. Avoid selecting a credit card — Venmo charges a 3% fee, and your card issuer may charge an additional cash advance fee. See Venmo fees for details.

How to Request Money

  1. Tap the blue Pay or Request button
  2. Find the contact
  3. Enter the amount and note
  4. Tap Request (blue) instead of Pay

The recipient sees your request and can approve or decline. You can send reminders. Note: requesting does not charge anyone — the recipient chooses whether to pay.

How to Split a Payment

For group expenses (dinner, Uber, etc.):

  1. Open the transaction you want to split after paying
  2. Tap Split at the bottom
  3. Select the contacts to split with
  4. Venmo automatically calculates each person’s share and sends them requests

Alternatively, use the New Request flow and manually divide the amount among multiple people.

How to Cash Out — Standard vs. Instant Transfer

Your Venmo balance stays in Venmo until you actively transfer it.

Standard Transfer (free, 1–3 business days):

  1. Tap Manage Balance on the home screen
  2. Tap Transfer to Bank
  3. Select your linked bank account
  4. Enter amount → Transfer
  5. Funds arrive in 1–3 business days (typically next business day if initiated on a weekday)

Instant Transfer (1.75% fee, min $0.25, max $25, arrives in minutes):

  1. Same steps as above
  2. Choose Instant instead of Standard
  3. Confirm the fee shown and tap Transfer

Which to choose? Use Standard unless you genuinely need the money today. At $200/transfer, you pay $3.50 per instant transfer — or $182/year if you transfer weekly. See Venmo fees for the full math.

How to Use the Venmo Debit Card

The Venmo Debit Card (Mastercard) lets you spend your Venmo balance directly — no transfer to your bank required, no instant-transfer fee.

How to get it:

  1. Settings → Venmo Debit Card → Get the Card
  2. Venmo mails a physical card (5–7 business days)
  3. Activate via the app when it arrives

Using the card:

  • Swipe at any Mastercard-accepting merchant — draws from your Venmo balance first, then your linked bank (if balance insufficient)
  • Withdraw cash free at 65,000+ MoneyPass and Allpoint ATMs — check the MoneyPass or Allpoint app to locate ATMs
  • Out-of-network ATM withdrawals cost $2.50 + operator fee

Daily limits:

  • Purchases: $3,000/day
  • ATM withdrawals: $400/day

How to Set Up a Business Profile

If you receive payments for goods or services, Venmo requires a business profile (personal profiles are for friends and family only):

  1. Settings → Create a Business Profile
  2. Name your profile and add a category
  3. Business payments are charged 1.9% + $0.10 per transaction

Business and personal profiles share the same app but are toggled separately. Customers can find and pay your business profile directly.
