How to Set Up a Venmo Teen Account

Requirements:

  • Parent must be 18+ with a verified Venmo account in good standing
  • Teen must be 13–17 years old

Steps:

  1. Open Venmo (parent’s account)
  2. Tap your profile icon → Family & Teen Accounts
  3. Tap Set Up Teen Account
  4. Enter the teen’s name and date of birth
  5. Send an invitation to the teen’s email or phone number
  6. Teen creates their own Venmo login using the invitation link
  7. Parent approves the account — the teen is now active

Teen Debit Card

The Venmo teen debit card is a Mastercard linked to the teen’s Venmo balance:

  • Daily purchase limit: $500
  • Daily ATM limit: $200
  • ATM network: MoneyPass (40,000+ fee-free ATMs)
  • Monthly fee: $0
  • Parental control: Parent can freeze the card instantly from their Venmo app

Parental Controls

Parents can:

  • View the teen’s full transaction history in real time
  • Receive push notifications for all teen transactions
  • Set spending limits (daily caps beyond the account default)
  • Pause or unpause the debit card instantly
  • Close the teen account at any time

The parent does not control where the teen can spend — they can monitor and react but cannot pre-approve individual purchases.

Privacy Settings for Teen Accounts

By default, teen Venmo accounts have more restrictive privacy settings:

  • Social feed: Teen accounts can only see payments between the teen and people they already follow — not the full public feed
  • Payment visibility: Teen payments default to private (not visible publicly)
  • Parents cannot send the teen money via Venmo business transactions
