Sharing the MTCN with Your Recipient

Once your transfer shows “Available for Pickup,” share the MTCN with your recipient. They will need:

Important: Only share the MTCN with the intended recipient. Scammers who obtain an MTCN may attempt to pick up the cash at a different agent location before the intended recipient does. If you believe your MTCN has been compromised, contact Western Union immediately at 1-800-325-6000.

How Long Is a Transfer Valid?

Western Union cash pickup transfers are typically valid for 90 days from the send date. If the recipient does not collect within 90 days, the transfer may be automatically canceled and the amount (minus any applicable fees) refunded to the sender. Bank deposit transfers do not have this limitation — funds are pushed to the bank account and do not expire.

What to Do If Your Transfer Is Stuck

If your transfer remains “In Progress” longer than expected:

  1. Check the expected delivery time for your send/receive method combination
  2. If ACH-funded, allow 3 full business days before contacting support
  3. If still not updating, contact WU at 1-800-325-6000 with your MTCN ready
  4. If the transfer has failed, WU will initiate a refund (5–7 business days to return to your bank)

Canceling a Transfer

You can cancel a transfer that has not yet been picked up or deposited:

  • App: Transfer History → tap the transfer → Cancel

Refunds typically take 3–5 business days to return to your original payment method.
