The Wise debit card is a Mastercard that draws from your Wise multi-currency account and converts at the mid-market exchange rate. It is one of the most cost-effective cards for international spending — significantly cheaper than most US bank debit cards and competitive with the best travel credit cards, without requiring a credit check.

How the Wise Card Works
The Wise card is linked to your Wise multi-currency account. When you spend in a foreign currency:
- Wise checks which currencies you hold in your account
- If you hold the spending currency, it uses that balance first (no conversion fee)
- If you do not hold the spending currency, Wise auto-converts from your largest balance at the mid-market rate + a small conversion fee (0.43%–0.7%)
Example: Spending €50 at a Paris restaurant
- You hold EUR in your Wise account → charged exactly €50, no conversion fee
- You do not hold EUR → Wise converts ~$54 from your USD balance at mid-market rate + ~$0.24 fee
Either way, you are never hit with a 3% foreign transaction fee the way most US debit cards charge.
ATM Withdrawal Limits and Fees
| Withdrawals per month | Fee |
|---|---|
| First 2 withdrawals (up to $100 combined) | Free |
| Additional withdrawals | 1.75% + $1.50 each |
| Above $100 combined in the free tier | 1.75% + $1.50 on the excess |
Example: 3 ATM withdrawals totaling $200 in one month
- Withdrawals 1–2 (up to $100): $0 fee
- Withdrawal 3 ($100): 1.75% of $100 + $1.50 = $3.25 fee
- Total fees: $3.25
For travelers making frequent cash withdrawals, Charles Schwab’s debit card (Schwab checking) reimburses unlimited ATM fees worldwide and may be a better fit if you need a lot of cash.

Wise Card vs Travel Credit Cards
| Wise Card | Chase Sapphire / Amex Travel Cards | |
|---|---|---|
| Foreign transaction fee | 0% (up to $200/mo) | 0% |
| ATM cash (abroad) | 2 free/month to $100 | Often 3% cash advance fee |
| Exchange rate | Mid-market | Mid-market |
| Rewards/points | No | Yes |
| Credit check required | No | Yes |
| Annual fee | $0 | $0–$695 |
Bottom line: Travel credit cards offer rewards but require good credit and charge cash advance fees at ATMs. The Wise card is better for ATM cash abroad and requires no credit check. Use a travel credit card for purchases (for the rewards) and the Wise card at ATMs (for the free withdrawals).
Freezing and Replacing the Card
You can instantly freeze or unfreeze the Wise card in the app. If your card is lost or stolen, freeze it immediately and order a replacement. Replacement card fee is approximately $5–$9.
