Chime charges no monthly fee and no overdraft fee. The only recurring fee most members encounter is $2.50 for withdrawals at out-of-network ATMs — avoidable by using any of 60,000+ Allpoint or MoneyPass machines. SpotMe provides overdraft coverage up to $200 at zero cost for eligible direct deposit users.

SpotMe: $200 Fee-Free Overdraft

SpotMe is Chime’s overdraft feature. When enabled, Chime covers debit card purchases and cash withdrawals that would put your balance below $0 — up to your SpotMe limit — with no fee.

Detail SpotMe
Maximum coverage Up to $200 (starts at $20, increases over time)
Fee $0
Eligibility Direct deposit of $200+/month to Chime
Repayment Automatically deducted from next deposit
Coverage type Debit card purchases, ATM withdrawals
ACH debits Not covered by SpotMe

SpotMe is not a loan — it’s a service that allows a temporary negative balance. Your limit increases based on account age, deposit history, and usage patterns. Starting limits are typically $20–$50 for new members.

Example: Your balance is $5.00. You buy $40 in groceries. With SpotMe enabled, the transaction is approved and your balance goes to -$35. Your next direct deposit automatically brings it positive.

ATM Fees: $2.50 Out-of-Network

Chime’s single significant fee is the $2.50 out-of-network ATM fee. Here’s how to avoid it:

60,000+ Free ATMs in the Allpoint and MoneyPass networks:

  • CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid
  • Target, Costco
  • 7-Eleven
  • Kroger, Publix, and most major grocery chains

Find the nearest free ATM using the Chime app’s ATM locator (tap the ATM icon on the home screen).

ATM operator surcharges: If the ATM operator charges a separate surcharge (e.g., $3.00), Chime does not reimburse this. The $2.50 is Chime’s own fee on top of any third-party charge.

Chime vs Traditional Banks: Fee Comparison

Fee Chime Chase BofA Wells Fargo
Monthly fee $0 $12 $12 $10
Overdraft fee $0 $34 $10 $35
Out-of-network ATM $2.50 $3.00 $2.50 $2.50
Foreign transaction $0 $5% $3% $5%
Minimum balance waiver N/A $1,500 DD $1,500 $500

Annual savings example: A member who would have paid Chase’s $12/month fee and one $34 overdraft fee per quarter saves: ($12 × 12) + ($34 × 4) = $144 + $136 = $280/year by using Chime.

No Wire Transfer Option

Chime does not support wire transfers (incoming or outgoing). This is the main limitation for members who need to:

  • Receive proceeds from a real estate sale
  • Send a large payment requiring same-day clearing
  • Receive an international wire

Workaround: Link a traditional bank account (Chase, BofA, etc.) for wire capability. ACH transfers from that account to Chime are free and take 1–3 days.
